The Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967 was the first great international rock festival and it was the moment when Big Brother and its lead singer Janis Joplin blew open the collective mind of the audience and rose to the top of the Rock music hierarchy. It was also the moment in which that same audience discovered Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and several other artists that were destined to take rock music to the next level.

In 1968 Big Brother signed with Columbia Records and Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, etc) became their manager. They went into the recording studio and produced the album that many consider their masterpiece and one of the greatest albums of all time: ‘Cheap Thrills”. Come out and see them Live.

Cold Blood, as a whole, features a stellar group of musicians who have been playing together for nearly 20 years including Steve Dunne on guitar, Steve Salinas on keyboards, a gritty-growling horn section comprised of John Hablieb and Rob Zuckerman along with a stellar rhythm section featuring Evan Palmerston on bass and T Moran on drums. The band members are all veteran Bay Area musicians who have played with many great artists including Elvin Bishop, Jefferson Starship, Boz Skaggs, Albert Collins and more.

Of course there is Lydia who still has the chops with the patina of a seasoned veteran who's done and seen it all. Together she and the band continue to twist together R&B, (both Old School and New School); into something that doesn't have a label... On any given night, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood power through their historic essentials, like "You Got Me Hummin'," "I Just Want To Make Love To You," "I'm A Good Woman," and "Down to the Bone."

German-born guitarist-singer Volker Strifler plays with a rare blend of fire, restraint and clarity. His creative style is rooted in the Blues but offers innovative explorations into Rock, Jazz, and Latin rhythms, with several stops in New Orleans along the way! The pace can be fast and raucous or laid back and down home, but most of all - it’s FUN!

Seeing Volker and his band perform live is a truly great experience. All but very few of the songs in their repertoire are original songs written by Volker. His combined talents as a guitar player and singer, but also as a songwriter set him apart from the crowd.
In 1996 Volker recorded his fledgling solo release titled ‘FULL MOON’ then in 2002 released his eponymous first SOLO CD, THE VOLKER STRIFLER BAND on Blue Rock’It records to great reviews. It is compiled of mostly originals and showcases his talents as a player, singer, and songwriter. The release of his third solo CD ‘THE DANCE GOES ON’ showed just how gifted Strifler is as a guitar player, singer, songwriter as well as producer. As proof, the CD was added to play lists in numerous radio markets throughout the United States and abroad, including the legendary WWOZ in New Orleans, San Francisco’s KPFA, Santa Cruz’s KPIG. Volkers most recent releases LET THE MUSIC RISE contains more eclectic selections

In the Summer of 2018, the musical journey of trumpeter/vocalist Paul Schneider and guitarist Hannes De Kassian began as they explored the realms of jazz and funk, lighting up clubs, bars, and wineries across Sonoma and Marin Counties in California's North Bay Area. However, like many, their progress was disrupted by the global pandemic in 2020. Amidst the turmoil, Paul reconnected on-line with his close friend and creative collaborator, renowned drummer Atma Anur, who now resided in Europe. This rekindled connection led to a musical revelation.

Atma asked Paul if he’d been writing any songs, and said he’d love to do some drum tracks. And Paul did, in fact, have a batch of new songs, and the collaboration began. He enlisted Hannes on guitar. They began crafting tracks, enlisting talented musicians remotely, and shaping what would become an extraordinary album. As the world emerged from the shutdown, Paul and Hannes kept recording, collaborating with Atma in Europe for mixing. Their collective efforts gave birth to "Funkalypse," released in Summer 2023.

Just The Right Recipe… The most frequently heard comment after a Spike’s Awesome Hotcakes gig goes something like this –

“No one is making this kind of music anymore!”

But what, exactly, is “this kind of music?”

Like hotcakes themselves, it goes by many names. Soul. Swing. Rhythm & Blues. Jazz. Jump. It’s a sound that’s classic and simple, but when it’s done right, it hits the spot, and has you grinning from ear to ear. Spike has spent years searching for this sound.

From the Texas blues joints he cut his teeth in to the funky halls of New Orleans, he was always studying the music, trying to find just the right recipe. It makes perfect sense that he found his bandmates in Sonoma County, a music scene that has fostered many eclectic artists for decades.

What he didn’t know was how hungry audiences were for “this kind of music.” You might say they’ve been eating it up like…Hotcakes!

MOMOTOMBO SF is a 10 piece group of prominent San Francisco Bay Area musicians, comprised mainly of notable alumni of Malo and Santana.   Their emphasis is on musicianship and improvisational creativity, with the intention of keeping the Latin Rock legacy alive through sharing their music in live concert format.

MOMOTOMBO SF concerts feature the music of both Malo and Santana, the iconic San Francisco native bands from which MOMOTOMBO SF's core members came.  Their mastery of the exciting interplay of Latin Jazz and Rock, driven by Latin rhythms and Afro Cuban beats, creates a powerful and authentic Latin Rock sound straight from the adventurous, psychedelic days of Winterland and The Fillmore.  The name MOMOTOMBO SF comes from the title of the first song on 1972's Malo Dos album, "Momotombo," which is also an active volcano on the shores of Lago de Managua, Nicaragua.  SF is for San Francisco, where the explosive sounds of groundbreaking Latin Rock erupted.   MOMOTOMBO SF.   Come experience the fire!
